Dear: Client
Starting January 2019, several Florida counties will be changing their discretionary sales and use surtax rates, thereby altering the total percentage of sales tax you need to charge for taxable sales.
The Florida sales tax consists of 6% state tax, PLUS a discretionary surtax determined by the county in which the product is delivered to the customer.
For example, for taxable items handed over to the customer in Hillsborough county, 8.5% in sales tax (6% state tax plus 2.5% Hillsborough countytax) will need to be collected.
For products delivered in Pasco county, for example, 7% in sales tax (6% state tax plus 1% Pasco county tax) will need to be charged.
We've detailed the new surtax rates in a document. Please make sure to update your invoicing software or QuickBooks to reflect the updated amounts starting January 1st, 2019. If you do not charge the updated amounts, the Florida Department of Revenue will hold you responsible for paying the difference. The updated surtax rates also apply to use tax that you need to pay for items (furniture, tools, machinery, office supplies etc.) purchased out-of-state or without paying sales tax, but not sold; and instead used in the course of doing business.
As always, we are here to assist you with questions and concerns, so please feel free to contact us at any time. Thank you for your business - we appreciate it very much.
Have a blessed holiday!
